Hyponic is from Hong Kong. Not exactly the first place you'd expect a doom/death and funeral doom band to come from. As with most releases from relatively obscure places, I didn't expect too much, but this album actually turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Roy, Mei Fun, Kin and Wah (that's the members, for those who didn't figure it out yet) crank out some severely heavy funeral doom on this short but good release. It's all slow and obscure, but more varied than some funeral doom artists, as there is room for some exciting lead guitar action here and there and there is relatively little repetitiveness. Besides that, this is funeral by the book. Slow, excruciatingly heavy, a little bit melodic, with abyssal growls. The production is still a notch below par, especially considering the denseness of the music which would benefit from a clearer sound. This denseness and many parts in the songs remind one of Esoteric a lot, which is also the main weak point of this album. But overall this is a good, although not groundbreaking album for funeral fanatics. Especially the tremolo-picked, ultra heavy ending of 'Subconscious Attack' and 'The Dead, The Stranger' were able to please me. Very promising act from an unorthodox place for doom!
